New gadget… (essential)

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

I’ve replaced my Bluetooth GPS module (which was stolen :( ) with a new Bluetooth GPS Logger from Holux (M-241) – handy single AA powered with a little LCD display.

It connects fine to my Nokia 6120C and works with TomTom / Google Maps.

The biggest down side is transfering the file from it, you have to use the supplied app as it does not show up as USB Mass storage device (its a 38400 baud serial port on usb).  But as it will store 130000 points between download that should only be once a trip, so not a big issue. It also works via bluetooth so you don’t have to use a cable if your laptop is bluetooth enabled.

Also it states the device is not water resistant, which seems an odd choice for something you would expect to hang from a rucksack (in fact that is how the packaging show it). Well there is no cover for the USB / ON-OFF switch but the rest of the device seems like it would cope with some light rain, proberbly best not to check it out, so I will keep it in a pocket in my rucksack.

It will get a real test next week, when we take the Motorcycle & Camera to Wales…
